100,000+ ChatGPT Accounts Data Stolen
Cyberintelligence firm Group-IB discovered over a hundred thousand logs containing compromised ChatGPT accounts on various underground websites, with the highest number observed in May 2023.
Asia-Pacific was the most targeted region, with nearly 41,000 compromised accounts, followed by Europe with almost 17,000. Information stealers are malware that targets account data stored on various applications, including web browsers and email clients. The stolen credentials are packaged into logs and sent back to the attackers.
ChatGPT accounts hold conversations and can contain sensitive information, making them valuable to threat actors. Enterprises integrating ChatGPT into their operations are at risk of exposing proprietary information if account credentials are compromised. Tech giants like Samsung have banned the use of ChatGPT on work computers due to these concerns. The majority of the stolen ChatGPT logs were attributed to the Raccoon stealer, followed by Vidar and Redline.
Users are advised to disable the chat saving feature or delete conversations after use to minimize the risk, although information stealers may still capture data through screenshots or keylogging. It is recommended to exercise caution when inputting sensitive information on cloud-based services and consider using locally-built and self-hosted tools for enhanced security.
Employees are hiding AI Use from their Bosses
Many employees are secretly using AI to enhance their productivity but they are hesitant to disclose their productivity-enhancing methods. These individuals, referred to as "cyborgs," often keep their AI use hidden for several reasons. Firstly, company policies banning AI usage lead employees to resort to shadow IT practices by accessing AI tools through personal devices. Additionally, the value of AI lies in people not realizing it is being used, as AI-generated content is more effective when perceived as coming from a human. Finally, there is a fear that revealing AI use could lead to job redundancy if workers automate significant portions of their tasks.
To ensure organizations can also benefit from increased productivity, Prof. Mollick suggests they should recognize that AI skills may be present throughout their workforce, provide training opportunities, reduce fears associated with AI use, incentivize employees to come forward with AI solutions, and quickly address questions regarding productivity gains and organizational restructuring.
It is crucial for organizations to embrace their "cyborgs" and collaborate with them to create a better AI-driven workplace.
