"Will 2024 be the Year of Terminator?" Rodney Brooks, a renowned robotics expert, suggests that while AI may be approaching a lull cycle, advancements in robotics continue to surge forward.

In the first week of 2024 alone, Google DeepMind introduced significant updates in robotics. These include three research systems—AutoRT, SARA-RT, and RT-Trajectory—designed to enhance robot decision-making, environmental navigation, and data collection. AutoRT leverages large language models for diverse data acquisition, SARA-RT improves the efficiency of Robotics Transformer models, and RT-Trajectory aids in learning robot control policies through visual cues.

Stanford University's introduction of Mobile ALOHA, a system for bimanual mobile manipulation tasks, marks another leap in robotics. Funded by Google DeepMind, this technology overcomes the limitations of traditional imitation learning from human demonstrations. These developments are not just technical marvels but are aimed at practical applications, such as cooking, cleaning, and industrial tasks.

Tesla's Optimus, initially limited in capabilities, has received upgrades enabling it to perform various tasks, including yoga. Boston Dynamics' Atlas and entertainment-focused robots, along with AI Robotics company Figure's humanoid that can make coffee, exemplify the multifaceted advancements in this field.

Despite these strides, a breakthrough akin to GPT-4 in robotics is challenging due to the massive investments and prolonged testing required for each task. However, companies remain committed to these ambitious projects. Notably, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced plans for mass production of humanoid robots by 2025, aiming for significant breakthroughs in the field.

While 2024 may be termed the "Year of Robotics," it is unlikely to witness the emergence of a "Terminator" scenario. Instead, the focus is on practical, utility-driven advancements that enhance the capabilities of robots in various domains.
