Let’s get into it!

Microsoft’s Big AI Gamble

Microsoft has been investing heavily in AI, both through its multi-billion dollar partnership with OpenAI and with its large investments in AI cloud infrastructure.

But will the company’s big AI gamble pay off?

If their latest earnings report is any indication, Microsoft’s bet on AI has paid off massively, with the stock jumping 7% this week alone thanks to record earnings powered by the company’s AI investments.

One of the main drivers in the company’s $140 billion dollar rise in value this week was the 27% year-over-year growth of Microsoft’s Azure cloud service, which you can think of as the company’s foundation-level infrastructure powering AI products.

"Azure gained marketshare, as customers continue to choose our ubiquitous computing fabric, especially as every application becomes AI-powered," CEO Satya Nadella told shareholders.

And thanks to the integration of ChatGPT into its Bing search engine, the company is also having record growth in it’s search business, soaring to over 100 million daily active users and causing Google executives to panic.

“For every 1 point of marketshare we gain in search (which would be taken from Google), it’s a $2 billion revenue opportunity for our advertising business,” said Philippe Ockenden, Microsoft’s CVP of finance.

As one of the main “picks-and-shovels” providers of AI infrastructure, and considering the rapid rate of adoption of AI technology, we’re expecting Microsoft to continue to benefit greatly from it’s big AI gamble for years to come.

Apple’s AI Health Coach

In a world where our phones can do pretty much everything, from ordering pizza to finding your next one night stand, it's no surprise that Apple wants your phone to play doctor too.

So say hello to Apple's latest project—an AI-powered health coaching service powered by machine learning that will provide personalized health advice based on data from your Apple watch.

Apple's health coach is rumored to cover everything from exercise and nutrition, to sleep and mental health, and they’re even planning to partner with healthcare providers to deliver a seamless, all-in-one health experience…

Meaning that while you're getting real-time advice on how to perfect your downward dog, you can rest easy knowing that your doctor is in the loop.

Apple is also reportedly working on technology for tracking your emotions, meaning that it’s only a matter of time before the company announces the launch of the most expensive mood ring of all time.

PoliticalAI

Regardless of your political leanings, the idea that AI could be used in order to influence future elections around the world is concerning.

And the first group to put this new technology to work?

The U.S. Republican party.

In response to President Biden’s announcement that he’ll be running again in 2024, the Republican party has released an AI-generated video attacking the President.

Titled “Beat Biden,” the video is described as “an AI-generated look into the country's future if Joe Biden is re-elected in 2024.”

In reality this is little more than a traditional political hit piece, one that could have easily been put together with actual footage of Joe Biden, but the video serves as a reminder that the threat of deepfakes is alive and well ahead of the 2024 US presidential elections.

The detection of debunking of AI deepfakes would be one area where immediate legislation in the US would make sense, but with the painfully slow speed that American regulators move, it’s unlikely we’ll see any type of legislation that would prevent AI deepfakes introduced before the upcoming election.
