AI vs. Superbugs

By tapping into the power of AI, researchers at MIT have made a groundbreaking discovery in the fight against drug-resistant infections.

The researchers focused their attention on a troublesome bacterium called A. baumannii, which is often found lurking in hospitals and war zones and is notorious for its knack for developing resistance to antibiotics.

And while finding new drugs to treat this type of bacteria is a process that can typically take years, by leveraging machine learning researchers were able to sift through thousands of potential drug compounds, allowing them to identify a molecule called “abaucin” that was able to inhibit the growth of the bacteria in a matter of weeks.

But what’s really exciting about abaucin is its remarkable "narrow spectrum" killing ability, meaning that unlike many broad-spectrum antibiotics, abaucin specifically targets A. baumannii, significantly reducing the risk of bacteria developing resistance to the drug.

This type of selective approach is a crucial advantage in the ongoing battle against drug-resistant infections, giving researchers hope for combating dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the future.
