Finnish Roastery Unveils AI-Generated Coffee Blend, Surpassing Expectations
In an innovative blend of tradition and technology, Kaffa Roastery, located in Helsinki, Finland, has introduced "AI-conic," a unique coffee blend created by artificial intelligence. This development marks a significant milestone in the coffee industry, traditionally known for its manual labor-intensive processes.
Developed in collaboration with local AI consultancy Elev, the "AI-conic" blend is composed of beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. The selection process, influenced by AI models similar to ChatGPT and Copilot, aimed to tailor a blend that would resonate with the sophisticated palates of coffee enthusiasts, pushing the boundaries beyond typical flavor combinations.
Svante Hampf, Kaffa Roastery’s managing director and founder, showcased the new blend at the Helsinki Coffee Festival, an event that annually gathers roasteries and coffee lovers. The AI not only selected the bean mix but also designed the coffee package label and provided a detailed taste description, labeling "AI-conic" as a blend characterized by its balance of sweetness and ripe fruit.
Interestingly, the AI's choice to use four different types of beans was initially met with skepticism by Hampf, as conventional wisdom in coffee blending often limits the number to two or three to maintain distinct flavor profiles. However, following the first test roasting and subsequent blind testing by Kaffa's coffee experts, the blend was deemed perfect, negating any need for human adjustments.
Antti Merilehto, a spokesman for Elev, commented on the success of the blend, noting that "AI-conic" serves as a concrete example of how AI can offer fresh perspectives to seasoned professionals and enhance the sensory experiences of coffee drinkers.
