🤖 AI Deepfakes Just Got Way Better

NP #007

Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!

Today we’ll be talking about the dangers of Meta’s new AI Tool and ChatGPT in cars.

Meta says its AI Tool is too dangerous to be released

Meta introduced Voicebox, a powerful AI tool capable of generating spoken dialogue with diverse applications. However, due to concerns about potential misuse, Meta has chosen not to release Voicebox to the public at this time.

Unlike previous voice generator platforms, Voicebox can perform speech generation tasks without specific training for each task. It utilizes a new approach that learns from raw audio and accompanying transcriptions, allowing it to create convincing new speech resembling the source material.

Voicebox supports speech generation in six languages, aiming to mimic natural speech patterns. It can enhance multilingual conversations and contributes to more authentic video game character dialogue. However, the tool also raises concerns as it could facilitate the creation of "deepfake" dialogue, falsely attributing words to individuals.

To address these issues, Meta has developed classifiers to distinguish between Voicebox-generated content and human speech. The company emphasizes the importance of transparency in AI development and sharing research with the community. However, in light of the potential risks, Meta has decided not to make Voicebox publicly available at this time.

Meta has shared audio samples and a research paper to assist fellow researchers in understanding Voicebox's capabilities. This cautious approach reflects the company's commitment to strike a balance between openness and responsible use of AI technology.

Mercedes-Benz tests ChatGPT in cars

Mercedes-Benz is conducting a beta test of ChatGPT as an AI-powered voice assistant, in its cars. The goal is to enhance voice interactions and allow drivers to engage in various conversations while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Over 900,000 vehicles in the US equipped with Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system will have access to the experimental program by using the voice command "Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program." The upgrade will be installed over the air for free, expanding the capabilities of the existing voice assistant.

The integration of ChatGPT aims to provide a more natural dialogue format, eliminating the need for drivers to remember specific phrases for activating functions. While improved voice interactions can be beneficial, some people argue that it might also be a distraction while driving. Microsoft, supporting the beta test through its Azure cloud system, highlights the expanded task capability of ChatGPT, enabling drivers to ask complex questions and discuss recipes. However, there are concerns about potential misuses, such as jailbreaking the system for unauthorized features or hacking into the car's software.

While the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and ChatGPT offers potential benefits, there are also considerations about the appropriateness and safety of using such advanced voice assistants while operating a vehicle.
