AI Detected a Supernove All On Its Own
A team of researchers, led by Northwestern University, has revealed the world’s first AI-driven, fully automated supernova detection and classification system. Impressively, it has already identified its inaugural supernova.
Traditionally, supernova detection relied on a combination of automated systems and human verification. Robotic telescopes would scan sections of the sky for potential supernova sources. Once a candidate was identified, human-operated telescopes would take over to collect the source’s dispersed light, or spectrum. The newly introduced tool, aptly named the “Bright Transient Survey Bot”, aims to bypass this manual step.
The researchers trained BTSbot with a machine learning algorithm using a staggering 1.4 million images from 16,000 astronomical sources. This data encompassed previous instances of supernovae, radiant galaxies, and momentarily flaring stars. With this extensive training set, the AI model successfully pinpointed a new supernova candidate and automatically requested its spectrum reading from a robotic telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California.
The system ultimately confirmed the candidate as a “stellar explosion” resulting from the full detonation of a white dwarf star. It then promptly shared its discovery with the global astronomical community. This means the AI system independently identified and broadcasted the new finding.
Northwestern graduate student Nabeel Rehemtulla stated: “The simulated performance was excellent, but you never really know how that translates to the real-world until you actually try it.”
Northwestern’s Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Adam Miller, emphasizes: “Ultimately, removing humans from the loop provides more time for the research team to analyze their observations and develop new hypotheses to explain the origin of the cosmic explosions that we observe.”
The development of this new system seems to be a great deal for space exploration overall.
