AI as a personal trainer
When we think of AI, personal trainers are not usually the first profession that comes to mind. However, a recent study published in Nature Digital Medicine has revealed that AI chatbots can be surprisingly effective as life coaches, especially when it comes to diet, exercise, and sleep patterns.
Researchers from the University of South Australia conducted the study, equipping test subjects with chatbots while comparing them to a control group without access to this technology. The results were astounding:
Those who could consult the virtual assistants took an average of 735 more steps each day, consumed an additional serving of fruits and vegetables daily, and enjoyed an extra 45 minutes of sleep per night.
Study author Ben Singh expressed his excitement about the potential of chatbots in promoting wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle, stating: "This technology has gotten to the point where it can be hard to determine whether you are chatting to a machine or a real person. For health, this presents tremendous opportunities for chatbots to support effective interventions."
Surprisingly, the study also found that text-based chatbots outperformed speech-based AI in health-related interventions. This suggests that, at least for now, text-based communication proves more conducive to achieving positive outcomes.
While tech companies have invested heavily in AI chatbots after the incredibly successful launch of ChatGPT, Professor Carol Maher, co-author of the study, offered a word of caution. She warned that the technology is still in its infancy, and users should continue to consult medical professionals.
Chatbots should be viewed as supplements to human coaching, providing round-the-clock support and motivation on one's fitness journey.
Professor Maher stressed the need for prudence, saying: "This field of research is young, and there is potential for chatbots to give inappropriate advice. For now, using chatbots to supplement human coaching could be the best solution, offering the best of both worlds – retaining the unique value of a human coach, combined with round-the-clock support from a chatbot."
