🤖 AI roleplay, build-a-bot, and Alibaba enters the chatbot wars
Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 Quora’s custom chatbots
🌊 The future of AI roleplay
🌊 Alibaba enters the chatbot wars
Let’s get into it!
Build-a-bot
Quora’s Poe Chatbot
Everyone’s favorite question and answer site Quora has become an unlikely innovator in the AI space, an indication of the strange times that we now find ourselves living in.
Quora’s main focus is AI chatbots, recently launching a new service that allows users to create their own custom chatbots with simple text prompts.
Here are a few of our favorites so far:
poe.com/PirateBot (talks like a pirate)
poe.com/japanesetutor (explains how to say things in Japanese)
poe.com/RoastMaster (slights you in entertaining ways)
As a board member at OpenAI, Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo saw the AI revolution coming sooner than most and has been working hard to capitalize on the booming demand, although he admits that creating hot AI products is not an exact science.
“Nobody knows anything, because the technology hasn’t been around for long and we haven’t had time to experiment,” said D’Angelo. “But also, nobody knows anything because it’s changing so fast.”
Initially launching a chatbot named Poe (trained on the company’s question and answer data) D’Angelo is working hard to test new products to see what gains traction, although with how quickly the world of AI is changing, he said that his team can only really plan about a week at a time.

AI Roleplay
Ever wondered what the social vibes would be like in a town full of AI characters?
Well wonder no more, as a team of Stanford researchers recently published a groundbreaking paper titled "Generative Agents" in which the team attempted to get AI’s to simulate authentic human interactions using generative AI models.
The team equipped 25 AI agents with the ability to reflect, remember, and plan ahead, the researchers then set the agents loose in a simulated town reminiscent of The Sims, watching anxiously to see what happened.
The AI agents demonstrated remarkable behaviors, including organizing a Valentine's Day party and remembering to brush their teeth every morning, and were even rated as more human-like than actual humans participating in role-playing scenarios.
The implications of this research are immense, showing the potential to create complex personalities for video game characters, AI coaches, therapists, and more.
ChineseGPT
Alibaba 1 month performance
Chinese tech giant Alibaba has decided to enter the chatbot wars, announcing the release of its ChatGPT competitor “Tongyi Qianwen.”
Based on the early details it sounds like a ChatGPT clone but investors responded well the the news, with the stock receiving a 3.8% bump immediately after the announcement yesterday.
The news follows Baidu’s less well-received Ernie chatbot, and you can expect more chatbot’s to enter the Chinese market from ByteDance, Tencent, and NetEase, although it remains to be seen whether any of them will be able to catch up to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Want to stop being tracked while you surf the web?
Then you need to set yourself up with a VPN.
If you’re not familiar, a VPN is like an encrypted tunnel for your online activity, making your data invisible to hackers and allowing you to browse the web in peace.
And while there are a ton of VPN’s out there, I personally use NordVPN, which I consider to be the bee’s knees of VPN’s.
NordVPN is consistently ranked as the #1 VPN by PCMag, Forbes, Wired, and TechAdvisor, and the best thing about it is that you can connect up to 6 devices on one plan, meaning that you can protect your entire household with a single account.
So unless you suffer from a kink that involves having your credit card info stolen while you browse the web, you should get yourself setup with a shiny new VPN from Nord here.
