AI Supeintelligence Is Coming Soon, Says OpenAI
OpenAI is taking the potential risks of superintelligent AI very seriously and is taking proactive measures to ensure its alignment with human interests. In fact, they're assembling a new team dedicated to making sure these advanced systems work for the benefit of people, rather than against them.
According to a recent blog post by OpenAI on July 5, although "superintelligent" AI may seem distant, it could become a reality within the next decade. The co-founder of OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever, and Jan Leike, the co-head of the new team, expressed their concerns about the lack of a solution for steering or controlling a potentially superintelligent AI, which could potentially go rogue and cause harm.
While a superintelligent AI has the potential to address many of our world's challenges, the authors emphasized that it also carries the risk of disempowering humanity or even leading to human extinction.
To tackle these concerns, the newly formed team, named “Superalignment”, aims to develop AI systems with human-level intelligence that can effectively supervise and manage superintelligent AI within the next four years.
OpenAI is actively seeking individuals to join this team and contribute to their research efforts. In a commitment to the cause, the company plans to allocate 20% of its computing power towards this important endeavor.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has consistently called for global regulators to prioritize addressing the risks associated with AI. In a joint open letter signed by Altman and numerous tech leaders, they emphasized that mitigating the risk of AI-related threats should be viewed as a global priority alongside other significant societal-scale risks like pandemics and nuclear war.
While some individuals, including Elon Musk, have expressed concerns about the regulation of AI and called for temporary pauses on its development, not everyone shares OpenAI's specific worries about the future problems posed by superintelligent AI.
In fact, AI ethicists have highlighted the urgent need to address concrete and present-day issues that AI companies are currently exacerbating, as outlined in a letter published by the Distributed AI Research Institute.
But the question remains: is AI superintelligence actually coming soon? And if so, will it turn out to be dangerous?
