Facial recognition gone wrong
While AI has shown great promise in revolutionizing a number of industries, that doesn’t mean that the technology isn’t prone to serious errors.
Take Randal Reid, for example, who was falsely identified as a shoplifting suspect using a new AI-powered facial recognition system, leading to him spending a week in jail for a crime that took place in a state that he had never visited.
Thankfully, after a costly legal battle, Reid was eventually cleared of all charges, but it opens up the question of why he was forced to prove his innocence to begin with.
The company providing the technology that led to his arrest is ClearviewAI, which scrapes billions of photos from social media sites in order to create a face-based search engine used by law enforcement agencies, and claims to have a “very small rate” of falsely identifying suspects.
And while systems like Clearview have the potential to be valuable tools for law enforcement, there are certain applications of AI where it may be in our interest to ignore Silicon Valley’s traditional motto of “move fast and break things” in order to make sure the technology is actually functioning as intended.
AI Tax Prep
Not all job losses will be mourned the in the coming AI revolution, and none less than the dreaded tax accountant.
A new AI-powered startup named April may become our new tax-knight in shining armor, seeking to simplify the tax filing process and helping to optimize your returns through the use of machine learning algorithms.
The tool works by translating tax law into software code, allowing users to maximize their deductions throughout the year to make sure that you pay as little in taxes as possible.
And when tax time does come, the tool helps users submit all of the required filings to the IRS, allowing you to complete your taxes in a matter of minutes.
