🤖 A.I. weapons, Adobe Firefly, and ChatGPT finally gets internet access
3/25/23
Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!
Here's what we have for you today:
ChatGPT gets internet access
China’s new A.I. weapons
Adobe’s new A.I. tools
ChatGPT is online!
Thanks to a host of new plug-ins ChatGPT is officially online, allowing the tool to access up-to-date information from the web, run computations, and connect to third party services.
The most exciting of the new plugins is OpenAI’s web-browsing plugin, which allows ChatGPT to draw data through the Bing search API to provide up to date answers to your questions, although the new tool-building functionality come in a close second.
Highlights of the the new third party integrations:
Expedia- Planning trips
Instacart- Grocery delivery
OpenTable- Restaurant reservations
Speak- Learn new languages fast
Wolfram- Computation capabilities
Zapier- Control thousands of apps
Third party integrations opens up an unbelievable amount of opportunity for creating new tools and products, so keep an eye out, as we’ll be covering projects made with this new functionality in future issues.
Last but not least, regarding safety concerns, the team at OpenAI has implemented several safeguards to go along with the new capabilities, so fingers crossed that this latest update will not lead to the rise of Skynet.
You can check out OpenAI’s blog post on the new capabilities here.
China’s A.I. Weapons
China is working to supercharge its military capabilities by harnessing the power of AI, allowing the nation to develop next generation weapons systems in a fraction of the time.
In a recent study, a research team for the China Ship Design and Research Center was able to design the entire electrical system for a new warship in a single day, a process that typically takes 300 days to complete.
A.I. designed hypersonic missile
China has also utilized A.I. to improve the performance of their hypersonic weapons, and has successfully used the technology to turn commercial imaging satellites into potent spy satellites.
Yet China’s A.I. plans extend beyond traditional weapons, as the country endeavors to become the leader in “intelligent warfare,” actively seeking ways to exploit the military edge offered by A.I. in order “outsmart the enemy without a fight.”
For example, in the event of a war over the disputed territory of Taiwan, China has begun developing A.I. tools to manipulate public opinion and wage psychological warfare, hoping to erode the self-governing island’s “will to resist” through propaganda and disinformation.
The United States is actively attempting to block China’s access to the most powerful microchips in hopes of slowing their progress, yet early indications are that China can simply order a higher amount of less powerful chips in order to accomplish their goals.
Adobe AI Tools
No drama llama
Adobe is the latest entrant into the generative A.I. space, recently announcing a new family of A.I. models called Firefly that will allow you to use everyday language to create “extraordinary new content.”
The company included two tools in it’s initial release, a text-to-image generator and a tool to generate stylized text, yet the company plans to introduce AI tools across its suite of apps in the near future.
“With Firefly, everyone who creates content — regardless of their experience or talent — will be able to use their own words to generate content the way they dream it up,” said Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of generative AI.
In order to avoid any potential copyright issues, the company trained Firefly models exclusively on content from the company’s royalty-free media library, along with openly licensed and public domain content.
You can start creating your own A.I. art by signing up for the beta release of Firefly here.
