How A.I. will reshape society
Anyone that’s played around with AI tools like ChatGPT understands that this type of technology is like nothing we’ve seen before.
And while OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman believes that AI will be “the greatest technology that humanity has ever developed,” he’s the first to admit that the new technology will cause a significant disruption to society.
“The speed of the change is the part I worry about the most,” Altman said in a recent interview. “Its going to eliminate a lot of current jobs.”
In the past, technological advancements spread slowly enough through society that we were able to re-train displaced workers, yet the blistering speed at which AI is evolving is going to make this time different.
“Society I think has a limited amount of time to figure out how to react to AI, how to regulate AI, how to how to handle it,” Altman said. “There is huge potential downside.”
Altman himself seems cautiously optimistic, stating that “as with every great technological revolution in human history, although it has been true that jobs change a lot and that some jobs even go away, we’ll find new jobs, we’ll find new things to do.”
Yet when pressed on exactly what these types of jobs will be, Altman himself has a hard time understanding exactly what people be will doing for work in the future.
This isn’t to say that we should all turn into Luddites, smashing every computer in sight and shunning the new technology in fear of how the world will be changed by AI.
AI has proven to be a massive productivity booster for early adopters, with tools like Microsoft’s Copilot allowing software engineers to complete programming tasks in less than half the time.

And the productivity boosting effects that we’ve seen are only going to increase as the technology improves, with projections forecasting that software engineers will be able to complete work 10 times faster in the not-too-distant future.
So what exactly does this mean for the future?
In our opinion, the release of AI has created an “adopt or perish” dynamic, where the early adopters of the technology will become infinitely more productive, whereas anyone that shy’s away from the new technology will be left behind.
