2,000 people were polled about how they’re using AI
AI's potential impact on the world is generating a mix of excitement and concern. The Verge conducted a survey of over 2,000 US adults to gauge their thoughts and feelings about AI. While AI is gaining prominence in various fields, many people have yet to use AI tools, with younger generations being more familiar with them. AI-powered systems like ChatGPT and Bing are recognized by a significant portion of respondents, but usage remains limited.
The survey highlights high expectations for AI's societal impact, with around three-quarters of respondents believing it will have a significant influence. Generative AI, which generates text, ideas, and multimedia content, is a driving force behind the current AI boom. People are using AI tools for creative experimentation, such as music and video generation, but less frequently for professional applications like coding.
The survey reveals that AI users generally find AI systems to be better than what they could produce themselves, particularly in generating artwork. However, ethical concerns arise in the realm of generative AI, where systems may clone artists' styles without their consent. Respondents expressed mixed views on compensating artists and limiting the capabilities of AI.
There is strong demand for AI regulation and higher standards. The majority of respondents support labeling AI-generated deepfakes and developing regulations for AI development. However, some principles, like training AI models on fact-checked data and banning deepfakes without consent, are challenging to enforce.
Predicting AI's impact on society, respondents expressed concerns about job losses, privacy threats, and misuse by governments and corporations. These concerns outweighed expectations for positive outcomes like new medical treatments and economic empowerment. People generally felt both excited and anxious about AI's potential impact.
The survey also explored adventurous predictions, such as people developing emotional relationships with AI. A significant percentage of respondents believed in the potential for AI to wipe out human civilization, reflecting the existential risks associated with AI.
Overall, the survey portrays an emerging and uncertain technology with a wide range of perceptions and expectations.
