🤖 The looming job apocalypse

6/10/23

Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!

In today’s article, we’re going to highlight a recent survey that breaks down how concerned Americans are about AI taking their jobs.

Let’s get into it!

With AI set to disrupt almost every industry around the world, there’s a strong possibility that millions (if not hundreds of millions) of people are going to lose their job as a result of the new technology…

Although a majority of American workers aren’t concerned.

In a recent study, only around 24% of workers expressed fear that AI could make their jobs obsolete, and interestingly, it is the younger workers and those with lower salaries that are more likely to harbor concerns.

For instance, 32% of workers between the ages of 18 and 24 reported worries about AI taking their jobs, while only 14% of workers aged 65 and older felt the same.

Financial considerations also played a role in the level of worry, as 30% of workers earning less than $50,000 a year expressed concerns about AI, compared to 16% of those making over $150,000.

Additionally, workers who were fully remote were more likely to believe that their jobs would be affected by AI disruption, in contrast to those working in person, although after getting accustomed to attending meetings in pajamas, I’m not convinced that the threat of losing your job is enough motivation to get people to go to the office.

The data also suggests that fears about AI job losses extend beyond low-wage workers to knowledge workers as well, with 51% of workers in advertising and marketing and 46% of workers in business support and logistics expressing worries about AI taking their jobs.

And while a majority of workers did not report immediate concerns, they did anticipate changes in their jobs as a result of AI, with 43% of workers expected significant changes to occur within their industry in the next five years as a result of the new technology.

So will AI turn out to be the AI apocalypse that many are predicting?

Well according to AI experts, while jobs certainly will be lost, the people that start learning how to take advantage of AI right now in order to become more productive will be in far less danger than those who ignore the new technology.

Experts recommend that workers explore AI applications to adapt and safeguard their jobs, suggesting that everyone from lawyers to educators embrace AI technologies in order to remain relevant in their fields.

The survey also revealed that high-level executives were more likely to discuss AI at work, with 23% of C-level executives and 27% of VP-level executives reporting frequent AI discussions, while entry level employees seemed to be less interested in the new technology.

And one thing that I found particularly interesting was that AI conversations within the workplace were not widespread outside of the tech industry, with only 14% of workers reported extensive discussions about AI, and 51% stating that AI had not been discussed at all, meaning that companies that take advantage of AI early are sure to gain a signification advantage over the AI Luddites of the world.

And while it remains to be seen exactly how many jobs AI will replace, one thing is for certain…

The early adopters of the new tech are certainly going to fare better than those that simply choose to ignore it.
