Apple Spends Over $1M on AI every day
Apple is heavily investing in artificial intelligence (AI), with a recent report from The Information revealing that the tech giant is pouring millions of dollars daily into AI research and development. The company is currently developing multiple AI models through various teams.
Apples AI Teams and Their Focus:
Apple's approach to AI isn't one-dimensional. They have established multiple teams, each concentrating on different facets of AI:
Foundational Models: This team is Apple's primary unit for conversational AI, which is AI designed to communicate in a human-like manner. With a strength of around 16 members, some of whom have previously worked at Google, the team is a blend of experienced engineers and AI experts. John Giannandrea, who was brought into Apple in 2018, leads this unit. His main task was to enhance Siri, Apple's voice assistant. Interestingly, despite his role, Giannandrea has expressed reservations about how effective chatbots powered by AI language models can be, indicating a cautious and thoughtful approach to their development.
Visual Intelligence Team: This team's mission is to advance image generation through AI. Such technology can have applications in various fields, from augmented reality to advanced photo editing and more.
Multimodal AI Group: This group is pioneering research in AI that can process both textual and visual data. The term "multimodal" refers to the AI's ability to handle multiple types of input, like text, images, and videos, making it versatile in its applications.
Apple's AI endeavors are not just for internal advancements. They are exploring the creation of a chatbot for AppleCare customer interactions and are looking into ways to streamline multistep tasks using Siri.
One of the most notable revelations from the report is the development of Apple's in-house language model named Ajax GPT. This model is said to be trained on an astounding 200 billion parameters, which, for context, is a measure of the model's complexity and potential capability. Sources suggest that Ajax GPT might even surpass OpenAI’s renowned GPT-3.5 in terms of power and efficiency. However, this model is primarily for internal use and is closely guarded within Apple.
As of now, Apple has not officially commented on the report.
