Let’s get into it!
Biden on AI
President Joe Biden met with his science and technology advisors earlier this week in order to better understand the risks and opportunities that are unfolding with the development AI.
After speaking with the advisory group, which includes academics as well as executives from Microsoft and Google, Biden had this to say:
“AI can help deal with some very difficult challenges like disease and climate change, but it also has to address the potential risks to our society, to our economy, to our national security.”
And while Italy has taken a more proactive approach to addressing concerns about the new technology, the United States has yet to introduce any meaningful legislation restricting the development of AI.
“The U.S. has had a more a laissez-faire approach to the commercial development of AI,” said Russell Wald, managing director of policy and society at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
But Wald said this meeting shows that Biden “is setting the stage for a national dialogue on the topic by elevating attention to AI, which is desperately needed,” meaning that it may only be a matter of time before the US introduces AI legislation of its own.
As to whether the president thought AI was dangerous, Biden said that “it remains to be seen.”
Pausing AI
As you may know, a letter was published last week, co-signed by Elon Musk and more than 1,000 AI experts, demanding an urgent pause in the development of AI systems "more powerful" than OpenAI's GPT-4.
The letter claims that “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” calling AI an “out-of-control” race “that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or control.”
And while many in the tech world think that pausing the development of AI (at least until we can understand the risks) is a smart idea, Bill Gates is not convinced that we could pause the development of AI, even if we wanted to.
“I don’t think asking one particular group to pause AI solves the challenges,” Gates said on Monday, explaining that getting the entire world to agree on halting the development of AI would be unrealistic.
“Would every country in the world agree to stop? Gates asked. ”Clearly there’s huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas.”
Fingers crossed that we’re able to identify the “tricky areas” before they destroy humanity.
