Amazon Boosts AI Capabilities by Acquiring Adept’s Top Talent
In a significant move to enhance its AI status, Amazon has successfully recruited the co-founders and several team members of the AI startup Adept. This strategic acquisition is seen as an effort to strengthen Amazon's standing in the competitive AI landscape and reduce any perceived gaps with rivals like Microsoft.
Adept, a San Francisco-based startup valued over $1 billion, announced the departure of its co-founder and CEO, David Luan, along with other key members, who have all opted to join Amazon. This transition includes a licensing agreement, allowing Amazon to utilize Adept's technology, which is primarily focused on automating business functions. However, terms of this deal have not been shared publicly.
This tactic mirrors a previous strategy by Microsoft, which acquired significant talent and technology from Inflection AI in March for approximately $650 million, a move that has since attracted regulatory attention. Despite the shift, Adept maintains that it will continue to operate independently.
Amazon's aggressive recruitment drive comes at a time when the tech giant is doubling down on developing a large language model that could rival those backed by Microsoft and Alphabet. Furthermore, Amazon is revamping its Alexa voice assistant with advanced generative AI capabilities, aiming for more dynamic and responsive user interactions.
The recruited Adept team members, now under Amazon’s wing, are set to report to Rohit Prasad, who is at the forefront of Amazon’s efforts in artificial general intelligence (AGI). Others will contribute to the development of devices and various services, highlighting Amazon's broad-based approach to integrating AI across its platforms.
