Bill Gates: ‘GPT-5 Won’t Be Much Better Than GPT-4’
With AI’s insanely rapid rise, the question on everyone's mind is: can it maintain this pace? Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently discussed his perspective in an interview with the German business paper, Handelsblatt.
Gates acknowledges the work and dedication at OpenAI, particularly CEO Sam Altman, who is optimistic about GPT-5 surpassing its predecessor. However, he holds the view that the current state of generative AI may have hit a peak, though he's open to the possibility of being proven wrong.
Reflecting on the jump from GPT-2 to GPT-4, Gates characterized the improvement as "incredible". As for the future, the timeline for the development and release of GPT-5 is still uncertain. Speculation points to OpenAI working on prototypes, primarily aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its models, and the cutting of costs.
Looking ahead, Gates envisions substantial potential in today's AI systems, provided that the high costs and error rates associated with development can be reduced, and reliability can be enhanced. He predicts this transformation could occur within the next two to five years.
On the subject of chip technology, Gates doesn't see Nvidia as holding an absolute monopoly. While Nvidia is currently by far the biggest player, Gates says that several companies, including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, are actively working on competitive offerings. He predicts that the availability issue will find a resolution.
In Gates' perspective, achieving understandable AI is a crucial milestone. He points out the peculiar situation where we know the algorithm, but the inner workings remain somewhat mysterious. Gates says it's up to us to solve this puzzle in the ten years to come.
Though Gates is no longer directly involved in Microsoft's day-to-day operations, he still has an advisory role and is well-informed about OpenAI's leadership and initiatives. Microsoft holds the largest stake in OpenAI, with a 49% ownership.
