CEO criticized for picking AI bot over human staff

An Indian CEO, Suumit Shah, received criticism after announcing on Twitter that his company had replaced 90% of its support staff with an AI chatbot. Shah, the founder of Dukaan, claimed that the chatbot significantly improved customer query response and resolution times. His tweet sparked outrage, as it coincided with growing concerns about AI's impact on job security, especially in the service industry.

In a series of tweets that gained over one million views, Shah explained his company's decision to implement the chatbot. He acknowledged the difficulty of laying off employees but deemed it necessary for the firm's profitability. Shah stated that Dukaan had long struggled with customer support and sought to address this issue through the AI chatbot. He elaborated on the development process of the bot and the AI platform, emphasizing its ability to quickly and accurately answer various queries.

Shah emphasized that launching a business in today's era of instant gratification is achievable for anyone with the right idea and team. He mentioned the firm's ongoing hiring for multiple roles. However, many Twitter users criticized Shah's tweets, accusing him of callously disrupting his staff's lives with the decision. They expressed disappointment that he failed to mention the assistance provided to the laid-off employees and believed the tweets should not have been a celebratory marketing thread.

Responding to the criticism, Shah dismissed the notion of taking offense on behalf of others and stated that he would address assistance for his staff on LinkedIn, where he believed people sought profitability rather than sympathy.

Google’s medical AI is being tested in hospitals

Google's Med-PaLM 2, an AI tool designed to answer medical questions, has been undergoing testing at the Mayo Clinic research hospital and other institutions since April. The tool is an updated version of PaLM 2, which was announced at Google I/O in May. Med-PaLM 2 has been trained on medical expert demonstrations, making it more suitable for healthcare conversations than general chatbots like Bard, Bing, and ChatGPT.

While Med-PaLM 2 shows promise in areas such as reasoning, providing consensus-supported answers, and avoiding incorrect comprehension, it still faces accuracy issues, according to research published by Google in May. Physicians found more inaccuracies and irrelevant information in answers from Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 compared to other doctors.

The Wall Street Journal reports that customers testing Med-PaLM 2 will have control over their encrypted data, and Google won't have access to it. Google's senior research director, Greg Corrado, stated that Med-PaLM 2 is in its early stages and acknowledged that he wouldn't want it involved in his family's healthcare journey. However, he believes the tool can greatly expand the areas where AI can be beneficial in healthcare.
