AI to the Rescue: Combating Climate Change's Impact on Coral Reefs
The Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) in Florida is leveraging AI to combat the devastating effects of climate change on coral reefs. A new tool, CeruleanAI, developed by the CRF, is at the forefront of this innovative approach. It utilizes AI to analyze 3D maps of reefs, providing researchers with a novel perspective for monitoring restoration efforts in a warming world.
Traditionally, coral conservationists had to physically swim out to reefs to take notes on individual corals, a process that was both time-consuming and limited in scope. The shift to using GoPros and software to create 3D photomosaics marked a significant improvement. Now, CeruleanAI takes this a step further by enabling a broader ecological focus, assessing the health of coral communities and their recovery progress.
The summer of 2023 witnessed an unprecedented coral bleaching event due to extremely high water temperatures, leading to the loss of many young corals planted by the CRF. Coral bleaching, a phenomenon where corals expel the algae living in their tissues due to stress, often results in coral death if the stress persists.
While AI offers promising solutions for coral restoration, there is a growing concern about the environmental impact of AI models themselves, particularly regarding their greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers emphasize the importance of being mindful about the overall environmental toll of using AI in conservation efforts.
However, CeruleanAI represents a significant advancement in coral restoration efforts. By providing detailed insights into the health and recovery of coral reefs, it enables conservationists to make more informed decisions and take effective actions to protect these vital ecosystems.
