The ChatGPT Kiss of Death

E-learning powerhouse Chegg had a nice business going, helping students with their homework and providing low-cost access to textbooks…

Right up until the moment that ChatGPT came out.

As early as March the company noticed a significant slowdown in subscriptions for their online tutoring and e-learning platform, attributing the decline to students using ChatGPT in place of Chegg’s paid services.

And while Chegg CEO Dan Rosenweig expressed that his team has solid plans in place to integrate AI into the business, stating that the company is “embracing AI aggressively and prioritizing our investments to meet this opportunity,” investors didn’t seem to care.

As soon as the phrase “We now believe ChatGPT is having an impact on our new customer growth rate” came out of the CEO’s mouth on the company’s earnings call this week, investors went into a panic.

In a matter of hours the shares of Chegg dropped 48%, cutting the companies value in half and serving as a warning for other companies about the disruptive power of AI.

And while Chegg was the first major victim of ChatGPT they will certainly not be the last, making it more important than ever to become an early adopter of AI in order to make sure that you don’t suffer the same fate.

ZillowGPT

Ever thought your house hunting experience was missing a little AI magic?

Well not anymore, thanks to Zillow’s game-changing ChatGPT plugin that will make finding the home of your dreams a breeze.

The real estate giant has teamed up with OpenAI to create an "ultra-smart" chatbot powered by ChatGPT, making the process of finding your ideal home easier than ever.

“Our AI chatbot will help tailor property search results based on individual preferences and unique criteria," said Zillow VP of communications Katie Curnutte, so that instead of hunting through page after page of listings; the new chatbot will do all of the heavy lifting for you.

The tool is currently in alpha testing, but we’re expecting the company to roll this new feature out to all ChatGPT users in the next few months.

IBM’s AI Layoffs

IBM is the latest company to join the AI layoff party, but with a slight twist.

Rather than replacing current workers with AI, the company has paused hiring for 7,800 jobs that they believe can be automated using AI.

In a recent interview, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said that the company’s 26,000 non-customer facing roles are ripe for automation, stating that he “could easily see 30% of those workers getting replaced by AI over a five-year period.”

But the CEO doesn’t necessarily see this as a bad thing, as he expects that AI will lead to the creation of far more jobs than it replaces.

“It’s not as simple as jobs going away,” the CEO said.

“The number of jobs in customer care, in coding, and in developing artificial intelligence is going to increase so much that the net increase is going to be positive. And while there’s a movement from one area to the other, that has been the nature of technology for 250 years.”

But will this optimistic outlook will become reality?

We aren’t convinced, but only time will tell.
