ChatGPT Finds Its Voice: What It Means for You
OpenAI is gradually rolling out its advanced voice mode for ChatGPT to a limited number of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Debuted at the GPT-4 launch event in May, this feature drew attention for its lifelike quality, resembling Scarlett Johansson’s voice. Initially slated for a June release, the rollout was postponed to address safety concerns and improve the model’s ability to filter out inappropriate content.
At the event, the advanced voice mode impressed me with its capability to handle interruptions and adapt storytelling styles seamlessly. This new mode is significantly more advanced than the previous version, showcasing OpenAI's continuous push for more natural and responsive AI interactions.
One notable controversy involved the onstage voice, “Sky,” which bore a striking resemblance to Scarlett Johansson’s voice in the movie Her. Johansson reportedly contacted OpenAI to inquire about the voice's creation, leading the company to pull it temporarily. Christianson clarified that the new voice mode will feature only four preset voices created with voice actors and will block any attempts to impersonate other individuals or public figures. OpenAI aims to extend this advanced voice mode to all ChatGPT Plus users by fall, promising enhanced interactive experiences without compromising safety.
Summary:
Available to select users now, the wider release to ChatGPT Plus is expected for subscribers in the fall.
The newest update enhances natural, emotional conversations and real-time responses.
The update will include access to 5 unique voices with screen sharing and video compatibility is also in allegedly in the pipeline for future updates.
Safety measures include pre-set voices and anti-deepfake features.
What we think
OpenAI's voice-enabled ChatGPT represents a big leap in AI interaction, blending natural language processing with multimodal inputs. This could redefine how users engage with AI, making interactions more intuitive productive, and “natural.”
While there has been some incredible progress so far, we’re only just beginning to see the many use cases of having an all-knowing virtual human in your pocket. Even if that still feels a little bit creepy right now.
