🤖 How to avoid the AI apocalypse

4/7/23

Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!

Here are the AI headlines making waves:

🌊  Meta launches new AI model

🌊  OpenAI on avoiding the AI apocalypse

🌊  The end of AI homework

Let’s get into it!

Meta’s new AI

Meta has just released it’s new "Segment Anything” AI model, a tool that utilizes advanced computer vision technology in order to extract objects from images or videos.

And while that by itself doesn’t sound particularly exciting, when you combine this new technology with augmented reality, things start to get interesting.

With the model’s ability to recognize objects in the physical world, this AI can provide you with contextual information based upon what your looking at, opening up all sorts of interesting possibilities.

Imagine walking down the street and getting restaurant reviews simply by gazing at the buildings, or having a virtual chess tutor providing you tips during a match…

The possibilities with this type of tech are limitless.

And while no companies currently offer a great set of augmented reality glasses, there are rumors of Apple launching a pair of AR glasses sometime in 2024.

OpenAI on AI safety

OpenAI has had a rough week.

As if getting banned in Italy wasn’t bad enough, the company has been relentlessly mocked by Elon Musk over their apparent lack of regard for AI safety, leading the team to release a blog post addressing the growing concerns over their powerful new technology.

Here are the highlights:

  • The company said that its committed to long-term safety research in order to identify potential risks before they become critical issues

  • OpenAI plans to actively collaborate with other research and policy institutions to foster a global community working together on AI safety

  • The team will take a precautionary approach to development, prioritizing long-term safety over short-term gains

  • Finally, the company has stated that they are committed to transparency and sharing research moving forward.

Whether AI will transform the world into a paradise or a post apocalyptic nightmare is hard to say, but it’ll certainly be interesting to see how it all works out.

The end of CheatGPT

In what’s sure to become the most hated AI tool in history, company TurnItIn has announced the release of its new AI plagiarism detector “Originality.”

With the goal of setting “a new standard for academic integrity,” the tool was created in the hopes of combating the rampant use of AI in completing school assignments, a temptation that is far to good to pass up.

And while this sounds like bad news for all of the kiddos crushing their schoolwork with ChatGPT, fortunately tutorials promising to help you slide under the radar of AI detection are only a quick youtube search away.

Want to stop being tracked while you surf the web?

Then you need to set yourself up with a VPN.

If you’re not familiar, a VPN is like an encrypted tunnel for your online activity, making your data invisible to hackers and allowing you to browse the web in peace.

And while there are a ton of VPN’s out there, I personally use NordVPN, which I consider to be the bee’s knees of VPN’s.

NordVPN is consistently ranked as the #1 VPN by PCMag, Forbes, Wired, and TechAdvisor, and the best thing about it is that you can connect up to 6 devices on one plan, meaning that you can protect your entire household with a single account.

So unless you suffer from a kink that involves having your credit card info stolen while you browse the web, you should get yourself setup with a shiny new VPN from Nord here.
