Kai-Fu Lee's Beijing-based startup, 01.AI, is making significant strides in the open source AI race. The company's AI model, Yi-34B, has outperformed competitors like Meta's Llama 2 and is gaining recognition for its capabilities in language processing and multimodal AI.

Yi-34B quickly rose to prominence on Hugging Face's AI model leaderboard, showcasing its proficiency in various AI benchmarks.The startup recently launched Yi-VL-34B, a multimodal model capable of processing images and discussing their contents.

Unlike other AI giants, 01.AI is releasing its AI models for free, aiming to build a loyal developer base and inspire innovative AI applications. The startup has raised $200 million, including funding from Alibaba, and is valued at over $1 billion.
