Let’s get into it!

China’s AI Ambitions

While a handful of US companies are currently leading the AI revolution, leaders around the world understand the profound implications of the new technology and are rushing to develop powerful AI systems of their own…

And China is no exception.

During a key economic meeting on Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping once again expressed the importance of developing AI systems for the future of the country:

"AI has become a new focus of international competition and a key engine driving a new industrial, scientific, and technological revolution,” Xi said during the meeting.

By seizing the opportunities presented by AI, Xi hopes to build a “holistic, advanced, and harm-free” modern industrial system, a move that would help cement China as the economic powerhouse of the future.

But the United States isn’t exactly in love with the idea of China becoming the next global economic leader, and for months has been actively restricting China’s access to advanced microchips and semiconductors in the hopes of slowing their progress.

Why does this matter?

By denying China access to the latest AI hardware, this opens up the possibility of China invading its US-friendly neighbor Taiwan in order to gain access to the technology it needs in order to achieve its economic goals, a move that could potentially spark World War 3.

Regulating AI

The global race to regulate AI is on, with countries around the world scrambling to create rules for the use and development of AI.

As AI continues to infiltrate every aspect of our lives, experts are urging nations to step up their regulatory game, although not everyone is onboard with the idea of slowing down their progress in AI.

While the EU has proposed legislation that would create a strong legal framework for regulating AI, countries with an opportunity to become the global leader in AI (including the US) appear to be more focused on competing for technological supremacy than in slowing their progress with a bunch of red tape.

And while regulating a new potentially dangerous new technology would make a lot of sense, because of the massive economic and military power that will be gained by the leaders in AI, the chances of any meaningful global regulatory standards are slim to none.

Google’s New AI Search

In the hopes of capturing market share among younger generations, Google is looking to step it’s search game up by integrating social content directly into search results.

So instead of just serving up a list of potential websites that could help you find what you’re looking for, Google will provide short video and social-media posts in an effort to make it’s search engine more “visual, snackable, personal, and human.”

The mastermind behind this move is Prabhakar Raghavan, Google's SVP of Search, who believes that "people want information to be more conversational and interactive, so we're working on that."

Google's AI chatbot will also help answer your questions directly in a human-like manner, potentially making your future late-night searches feel less like talking to a robot and more like chatting with a friend.

Traditionally a company that made very minor tweaks to its flagship search product, the move comes as users increasingly turn to apps other than Google in order to find information on everything from restaurant recommendations to advice on how to be more productive…

A behavioral shift that puts Google’s search dominance (and primary cash generator) at risk.
