🤖 The dark side of AI: high-tech scams

Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!

Here are the AI headlines making waves:

🌊  Scammers adopt AI tech

🌊  Meet DoctorGPT

Let’s get into it!

AI Scammers

Scammers have come a long way from the Nigerian prince emails of the early internet days, with the latest generation of scammers adopting AI in order to create ever more sophisticated ways of getting people to part with their hard earned money.

And the latest evolution in scamming?

Using AI-generated voices to trick people into believing that one of your family members has been kidnapped.

After receiving messages from loved ones saying that they’re being held for ransom, people are being tricked into handing over large sums of money fearing for the safety of their loved ones, including one Florida man who transferred $20,000 in a panic after believing his daughter had been kidnapped, when she was actaully safe at home.

“A reasonably good clone can be created with under a minute of audio, and some are claiming that even a few seconds may be enough,” said Hany Farid, a member of the Berkeley AI Lab.

Meaning that anyone that has ever uploaded a video of their voice to the internet is at risk to this type of scam, so you may want to think twice before putting yourself (and your voice) out there.

And should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of receiving a call from a loved one saying that they’ve been kidnapped, it couldn’t hurt to give them a quick call to verify if they’ve actually been kidnapped before you start filling that briefcase up with cash.

DoctorGPT

Welcome to the future, where your new doctor has the emotional capacity of a toaster, yet somehow manages to be the most compassionate healthcare professional you've ever met.

Sound like science fiction?

Well not anymore thanks to ChatGPT, the AI-powered doctor with a heart of code.

According to a recent study comparing the responses of doctors and ChatGPT to medical questions, a group of healthcare experts favored ChatGPT's replies over an actual doctor’s replies 79% of the time after finding the responses to be higher quality and more empathetic.

“ChatGPT responded with nuanced and accurate information that often addressed more aspects of the patient’s questions than physician responses,” said Jessica Kelley, a nurse practitioner and co-author of the study.

But don’t rush to get rid of your human doctor just yet, as this type of technology is more likely to complement doctors than outright replace them.

“The ultimate solution isn’t throwing your doctor out altogether,” said Dr. Adam Poliak, a professor of Computer Science at Bryn Mawr College and study co-author. “Instead, a physician harnessing ChatGPT is the answer for better and empathetic care.”

Never thought we would be living in a world where we would be relying on robots for their empathy skills, but here we are…
