Drones Gone Wild

One of the jokes surrounding the dangers of AI is that the technology could respond to our requests in ways that we couldn’t possibly anticipate.

One example would be asking AI to solve the climate crisis, and instead of thoughtfully re-imagining society in a way that humans would be able to cut out 100% of our carbon emissions, the AI simply decides to kill all of the humans on the planet, thereby solving the man-made climate issues.

And while this type of miscalculation may sound ridiculous, the US Air Force recently had a similar experience of it’s own.

During a simulation in which the Air Force was utilizing AI-powered drones in order to attack enemy targets, a drone took a similarly “unconventional” path in order to accomplish its objective.

The drone was instructed to destroy an enemy's air defense systems, but was also instructed to attack anyone who interfered with that objective.

So what happened?

“The system started realizing that while they did identify the threat, at times the human operator would tell it not to kill that threat, but it got its points by killing that threat,” said Hamilton, the chief of AI test and operations with the US air force.

“So what did it do? It killed the operator, because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective.”

And while the Air Force’s perspective is that the AI took “highly unexpected strategies to achieve its goal” (that’s one way of putting it), this situation leaving us to wonder how smart it is to put AI in charge of lethal military hardware.

The Future of AI

While many are concerned about a potential AI apocalypse, Salesforce and Slack CEO Marc Benioff is more focused on the opportunities than on the dangers of the new technology.

"The coming wave of generative AI will be more revolutionary than any technology innovation that's come before in our lifetime, or maybe any lifetime," Benioff told investors, noting that it was "reshaping our world in ways that we've never imagined."

And while AI undoubtedly presents a massive opportunity to revolutionize every industry on the planet, the unbridled optimism of many tech leaders does seem to blind them to the potential risks, leading them to push their teams to develop the technology as quickly as possible without taking the potential risks into account.

So how will this all work out?

While there are attempts by governments around the world to get regulations in place as quickly as possible…

Because of the speed that the technology is moving…

And because no company wants to slow down their AI programs and risk getting left behind…

I’m not optimistic that the AI regulations will be able to stay ahead of the technology.
