Elon’s TruthGPT

While details on Elon Musk’s new AI project have been scarce, a recent interview between Musk and Tucker Carlson has shed light on his plans for the new company.

“I’m going to start something which you call TruthGPT, or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe.” said Musk.

“And I think this might be the best path to safety, in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.”

Elon is more concerned than most about the potential dangers of AI, leading him to co-found OpenAI in 2015 with the goal of developing safe AI before disagreements with CEO Sam Altman led to his departure in 2018.

Since leaving OpenAI Musk has been a vocal critic of company, both due to the company’s transformation into a for profit business along with the apparent political bias built into the company’s AI models.

In the interview Musk went into detail as to why he believes that AI regulation is necessary, stating that there is a “non-trivial” probability of AI destroying civilization.

But not in the Terminator sense like you might think, but in a more subtle manner, by manipulating public opinion.

“The pen is mightier than the sword, and a super intelligent AI that is capable of writing incredibly well, in a way that is very influential, could potentially manipulate public opinion in a way that is very bad.”

Given Elon’s past successes as Tesla and SpaceX, and considering his concerns about AI, it’ll certainly be interesting to see what he comes up with.

Bringing Artwork To Life

Enough of the doom and gloom headlines, and finally an AI product we can all get excited about!

Meta has released a new AI model that brings your sketches to life, generating high quality animations from simple drawings and allowing everyone in the world to create their own animated characters.

This product is currently available in a non-user friendly form (to say the least) but you can expect Meta to launch a user friendly version of the technology in the coming months, so stay posted!

EU AI Regulations

In response to concerns about privacy and data misuse, the European Parliament is hard at work on a new set of AI regulations, a move that would make the EU the world's strictest AI regulator.

“AI is a pioneering technology and we need to harness it, which means putting rules in place,” said Dragoș Tudorache, lead negotiator on the regulations. “Self due diligence by companies is not enough.”

Key highlights of the proposed regulations:

Requiring AI developers, such as OpenAI, to disclose the use of copyrighted material in training AI models
Allowing content creators to demand payment for the use of their work
Placing responsibility for AI misuse on developers rather than businesses using the AI programs
A potential ban on facial recognition, predictive policing, and emotional recognition, although these issues are expected to face pushback from EU member states

The European Parliament and the European Commission will be working together to draft the final bill, with the goal of passing the law before the end of the current European Parliament term in 2024.

As to whether the regulations will have a meaningful impact, as we said earlier, unless 100% of the countries in the world put restrictions in place, the impact of any individual set of regulations will be negligible.
