Elon Musk Wants to Open Source Grok
In a recent podcast with Lex Fridman, Elon Musk revealed his ongoing affinity for open-source AI. The richest man on the planet expressed his advocacy for transparency in AI, leaning towards open-sourcing. This revelation comes as Musk's venture, xAI, launched Grok, its own chatbot, in a development cycle of just 4 months. Grok is trained on an impressive 8,000 NVIDIA A100 GPUs.
Interestingly, Sam Altman, who is taking a different approach with his OpenAI, took a shot at Musk's ambitious project. Altman managed to create his own version of Grok with a single prompt on GPT Builder, underlining the diversity in AI development approaches.

Musk also reflected on the founding principles of OpenAI. He recalled discussions with Larry Page, then CEO of Google and a former friend, revealing differences in their perspectives on AI safety. Musk told Fridman how Page labeled him a 'speciest' for advocating pro-human values, leading to a strain in their friendship.
The breaking point in Musk and Page's relationship, according to Musk, was the creation of OpenAI. Key to this was the recruitment of Ilya Sutskever, co-founder, and chief scientist at OpenAI. Musk described the intense recruiting battle with Demis Hassabis, founder of DeepMind, over Sutskever.
Musk's role in recruiting talent at OpenAI and providing substantial initial funding, around $40 million, highlighted his dedication to the company's early success. However, Musk pointed out a shift from the original 'open' vision, expressing concerns that OpenAI has become more closed source for profit, which, in his view, carries less favorable karma.
As a solution, Musk suggested the only way to restore OpenAI's open-source ethos would be for him to buy back the company.
