The EU is urging the US to join AI regulation talks …

EU Urges US to Join Regulation Talks

Didier Reynders, the European commissioner for justice, is tired of the US talking about tighter tech regulations without taking real action. As the US has effectively outsourced the regulation of tech giants to the EU, Reynders holds significant power in crafting and enforcing laws across the 27-nation bloc.

Ahead of his meetings with US officials, Reynders emphasizes the need for the US to step up and enforce regulations. He highlights the lack of follow-up on proposals for privacy laws similar to the GDPR and expresses concerns about the unchecked regulation of AI in the US.

Reynders believes that if the EU's forthcoming AI Act isn't matched with US rules, it will be difficult to ask tech giants to comply fully and change their practices. He stresses the importance of cooperation between the US and EU to establish an international standard.

Reynders expresses his desire for new AI rules and policies to be defined collaboratively with major tech actors. He believes that companies like OpenAI shouldn't fear new AI regulations and emphasizes the importance of transparency and disclosure in AI systems.

Additionally, Reynders talks about the need for GDPR compliance in services like Meta's Threads and Google's Bard. He mentions that the EU wants all major services available to its citizens, but compliance with GDPR is a priority.

Reynders proposes legislation that would enable people harmed by AI systems to seek compensation from technology developers. He also urges tech companies to voluntarily comply with forthcoming rules and suggests measures such as watermarking images and videos generated with AI and disclosing hidden uses of AI to users.

Reynders' tech agenda includes criminalizing forms of online harassment and abuse, such as revenge porn, and addressing "cookie fatigue" caused by excessive consent pop-ups when browsing the web. He is working on simplifying the process and hopes for collaboration between browsers and websites to streamline cookie consent.
