Free-speech AI by Elon Musk

After months of anticipation, Elon Musk has officially launched his own artificial intelligence startup called xAI. The billionaire entrepreneur behind companies like Tesla and SpaceX, aims to provide an alternative to ChatGPT with this new venture.

Musk, who has long been vocal about his concerns regarding the potential dangers of AI, has repeatedly warned about its potential for "civilizational destruction”. He has called for regulations to be put in place to govern the development and deployment of AI technologies, urging companies like Google and Microsoft to slow down their race for AI dominance.

With the launch of xAI, Musk has assembled a team of talented engineers from various tech firms that he hopes to challenge in the AI sphere. The startup has also enlisted the expertise of Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety, as an advisor. Their goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the universe through AI research and development.

The team at xAI has a remarkable track record, having contributed to major breakthroughs in the field, including projects like AlphaStar, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. They are actively seeking experienced engineers and researchers to join their technical staff in the Bay Area.

Interestingly, xAI will work closely with Musk's other companies, such as Twitter and Tesla, leveraging synergies and collaboration across these ventures.

Despite the launch of xAI, Tesla's stock performance remained largely unaffected, indicating that investors do not view the startup as a potential distraction for Musk.

In March, Musk had registered another firm named X.AI Corp, based in Nevada, with himself listed as the sole director. Ever since, the AI world has been speculating about his next move—now we know…

NEW: Google Chatbot passes US medical exam

Google's AI-powered medical chatbot, Med-PaLM, has achieved a passing grade on a tough US medical licensing exam, according to a recent peer-reviewed study. However, its answers still fall short of those provided by human doctors.

Healthcare is one of the areas in which experts think AI will make a huge difference. And so does Google.

It introduced Med-PaLM, an AI tool for answering medical questions, which became the first large language model to pass the USMLE, scoring 67.6% on multiple-choice questions.

To address false information, Google has developed a new evaluation benchmark and achieved promising results with Med-PaLM 2, scoring 86.5% on the USMLE exam. Concerns remain about the limitations of AI-powered medical chatbots, as there is a difference between answering medical questions and practicing medicine.

AI models are prone to "hallucinations" due to their statistical nature. Therefore, they should be considered assistants rather than the final decision-makers, as highlighted by AI expert Anthony Cohn.

Google aims to use Med-PaLM to support doctors by offering alternative options. Med-PaLM 2 has been tested at the Mayo Clinic research hospital for administrative tasks with low stakes and no direct patient involvement, according to The Wall Street Journal.
