Teaching a classroom full of students is no easy task.

Educators need to cater to diverse learning styles, keep students engaged, and provide individualized attention to each student, a delicate juggling act that requires adaptability, creativity, and a deep understanding of each student's unique needs…

Which is why the emergence of AI chatbots as potential tutoring tools in classrooms has gaining attention and intrigue from educators around the world.

These experimental chatbot’s aim to simulate the experience of one-on-one human tutoring, offering the possibility of personalized assistance and support for every student.

A group of sixth graders at Khan Lab School in Palo Alto are among the first early adopters of experimental chatbots, where the AI is trained to respond to students in a smooth and conversational manner, with the ultimate goal of empowering students to explore their interests and tackle new subjects at their own pace, ensuring no child is left behind.

"It'll enable every student in the United States, and eventually on the planet, to effectively have a world-class personal tutor," said Sal Khan, the visionary behind Khan Academy.

Khanmigo, the brainchild of Khan Academy, is at the forefront of this new wave of AI-powered learning tools, walking students through problems using the Socratic method in order to help them think critically and solve questions on their own.

And the chatbot even allows students to engage with fictional characters and historical figures in order to gain a greater depth of understanding on a subject, transforming the way that we think about education.

At Khan Lab School students have playfully tested the boundaries of Khanmigo's capabilities, from requesting math explanations in song lyrics to using Gen Z slang, with the chatbot effortlessly keeping up with their unique demands and allowing students to learn in a way that matches their unique learning style.

And educators at the school appreciate how Khanmigo engages students on their level, connecting with them in an interactive and relatable way, but perhaps the most interesting application of this new technology is how it opens up the possibility of providing low cost education to areas of the world that lack access to a formal school system.

"I always thought it would be 10-20 years before we could even hope to give every student an on-demand tutor,” said Khan. “But after witnessing the power of ChatGPT, I now realize that this new reality may be just months away."
