🤖 The future of illustration: AI vs. humans
Plus Google introducing AI ads
Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 AI illustrators hit the scene
🌊 Google to introduce AI advertising
Let’s get into it!
China’s AI Illustrators
AI-generated art is transforming the video game art industry in China, causing widespread anxiety among game illustrators who fear their jobs will soon be replaced by AI.
Recent breakthroughs in AI image generation have enabled anyone to produce impeccable drawings from simple text prompts, resulting in a very different job market for illustrators than what existed only months ago.
Freelance illustrator Amber Yu used to spend up to a week creating a single illustration for a video game promotional poster, a task that can now be completed in seconds thanks to tools like Stable Diffusion.
The result?
Job opportunities are drying up fast as the speed to complete artwork has been cut dramatically, leading to more competition, longer hours, and increased exhaustion for illustrators.
“AI is developing at a speed way beyond our imagination,” said Xu Yingying, illustrator at a game art studio in China. “Two people could potentially do the work that used to be done by 10.”

And while some players are pushing back against AI illustrations, preferring to know that human labor went into their creation, Chinese tech giants such as Tencent and NetEase that own large video-game publishing divisions are pushing the new AI technology hard in an effort to cut game development costs.
“Every technological revolution leaves some people behind,” said Xiao Di, an independent game developer. “But AI illustration is just the beginning … It might be programming or customer service next year, or the year after.”

Google’s AI Ads
Google is looking to transform the advertising landscape with the help of AI, aiming to help businesses create ads that are more engaging and impactful than ever before possible.
To accomplish this, Google will be integrating generative AI into their ads platform, allowing advertisers to develop hyper targeted and hyper personalized ad campaigns in order to lower ad costs for its clients.
The move comes in response to the advertising industry facing the dual challenges of rising ad costs and restrictions on personal data use, leading the company to look for ways to keep its $200+ billion dollars of annual ad revenue safe and secure for the future.
Not looking to be left in the dust, Meta has announced similar plans to incorporate generative AI into their ads systems by the end of this year.
With OpenAI helping to support similar AI-powered advertising projects, we hope for Google’s sake that their new ad tech is more impressive than it’s botched Bard chatbot launch…
