Google Adds Its AI to General Motors Cars

General Motors (GM) is leveraging Google Cloud's Dialogflow chatbot to enhance its OnStar in-car concierge service. Announced at the Google Cloud Next 23 event, this collaboration allows OnStar to respond to common driver queries, such as navigation assistance.

The announcement of this collaboration was a highlight at the Google Cloud Next 23 event, where Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai delivered a keynote. OnStar, which has been a staple in GM vehicles, has utilized Google Cloud's conversational AI for intent-recognition since its 2022 launch. With the latest improvements, drivers can now expect more intuitive responses to common queries, especially those related to routing and navigation.

GM's decision to bolster OnStar's features aligns perfectly with its ambitious vision. The automobile giant aims to cultivate a robust $25 billion subscription-based business model by the year 2030.

It's worth noting that GM's association with Google isn't new. Since 2019, GM has been rolling out vehicles equipped with Google's suite of services. This means drivers have direct access to Google Assistant, Maps, and Play right from their vehicles' infotainment systems. In a significant move in April, GM announced its intention to phase out popular services like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead, the company plans to fully embrace the "Google built-in" approach.

The results of this collaboration are already evident. With the assistance of Dialogflow, OnStar's virtual assistant is now adept at handling a staggering number of customer inquiries, with over 1 million queries addressed monthly in the U.S. and Canada alone. The enhanced chatbot not only understands customer requests more accurately on the first attempt but also responds in a modern, natural-sounding voice.

But the capabilities of OnStar's chatbot extend beyond just navigation. It's equipped to assist with a range of non-emergency queries, accessible via the OnStar blue button in GM vehicles. Impressively, the chatbot is also designed to recognize potential emergency situations based on specific phrases or words, ensuring that the call is promptly redirected to a human advisor.

Furthermore, Dialogflow serves as a comprehensive information hub for GM vehicles and their myriad features. Whether customers are curious about GM's upcoming 2024 EV lineup or need guidance on using the latest tech features in their cars, the chatbot is ready to assist.

In conclusion, GM's collaboration with Google Cloud's Dialogflow is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation, aiming to provide a seamless and enhanced driving experience for its customers.
