Google and AI: a Lot Is Going Wrong…
Google Featured Snippet is the feature that gives you a quick answer when you’re searching for something — an answer you don’t even have to click on a website for. However, a recent incident involving a peculiar query about melting eggs has raised eyebrows and certainly highlighted a deeper issue for Google.
Tyler Glaiel, an observant user, stumbled upon an intriguing Google search result. It boldly claimed that eggs could indeed be melted. This snippet was sourced from Quora, and more specifically, from its integrated "ChatGPT" feature. It’s important to note that, as many of us know, ChatGPT is certainly not always correct.
"This is actually hilarious," Glaiel said. Quora had seemingly optimized itself to dominate search results and was now dishing out ChatGPT-generated responses. This tactic, known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), involves tailoring website content to rank higher on Google.
this is actually hilarious. Quora SEO'd themselves to the top of every search result, and is now serving chatGPT answers on their page, so that's propagating to the answers google gives

Surprisingly, Google's response to the query "can you melt eggs" was a yes. Yet, when asked "can you melt an egg," the answer was a clear no. Both responses were drawn from the same Quora page titled "Can you melt an egg?" containing the erroneous AI-written text that also appeared in the Featured Snippet.
While Quora attributes the AI-generated response to "ChatGPT," OpenAI's ChatGPT consistently asserts that you cannot melt an egg in the traditional sense. It explains that eggs are composed of various elements, making melting impossible.
Upon closer examination, it was discovered that Quora's integrated AI answer feature doesn't employ ChatGPT, but rather relies on the older GPT-3 text-davinci-003 API. This older model is known to sometimes provide inaccurate information, referred to as "hallucination" in the field of AI.
After Andrei Volt noted that text-davinci-003 produced identical results to Quora's AI, it was confirmed through testing in OpenAI's Playground. This older model is now considered deprecated by OpenAI and is set to be retired on January 4, 2024.
It's crucial to acknowledge that the accuracy of Google's Featured Snippet results can be questionable, even without AI. In the past, incorrect information has been inadvertently endorsed due to algorithmic missteps.
So, why the fascination with melting eggs? Some individuals have posed questions about the possibility of melting hard-boiled eggs, perhaps contemplating the phase change from solid to liquid. This curiosity occasionally prompts searches on Google, which Quora seeks to address by providing answers to these common questions.
However, a larger issue looms. Google Search's declining accuracy over the past decade has become apparent. Techniques like appending "Reddit" to a query have emerged to combat SEO-driven spam sites. AI chatbots have gained popularity for offering answers without the interference of SEO tactics, though trusting these answers poses its own set of challenges.
Ironically, AI-generated responses are circling back into Google's ecosystem, creating a loop of inaccuracies that threatens to further erode trust in search results.
Google x AI has certainly not been a smooth road so far. It will be interesting to follow how this all evolves. One thing’s for sure: algorithm updates are on the way.
