Google Partners Up with AI Musicians

Google's Alphabet and Universal Music are currently engaged in discussions to obtain licenses for artists' voices and melodies to be used in AI-generated songs, according to reports from the Financial Times. This move comes as the music industry grapples with the emergence of "deepfake" songs, which utilize generative AI to replicate artists' voices without their consent.

This all started when an AI track of Drake & The Weeknd went mega-viral, and now the music industry is looking for how to curb it and cash in.

The primary objective of these talks is to develop a legitimate tool that allows fans to create their own tracks while ensuring proper compensation for copyright holders. Artists would also be given the option to participate in this process.

The music industry has previously confronted copyright concerns, notably with YouTube, resulting in the establishment of a system that now pays approximately $2 billion annually to the music industry for user-generated videos on the platform. This history of negotiation and collaboration between tech giants and the music industry serves as a backdrop to the current discussions between Google and Universal Music.

While these talks are still in their early stages and a product launch is not imminent, Google is reportedly also engaged in similar discussions with Warner Music. This suggests a broader industry trend toward finding solutions for AI-generated content that respects copyright and compensates creators.

At a recent Comic-Con event, voice actors shared their concerns about AI-generated content. Cissy Jones, known for her work in the animated TV series "The Owl House," expressed worries about her voice being used inappropriately, especially considering her role as a parent. Another issue highlighted was the displacement of voice actors by AI-generated voices. The founder of the National Association of Voice Actors shared a story of a voice actor who lost their job to an AI synthetic voice after working with a company for three years.

"They said, 'we have three years of your voice โ€“ we're just going to create an AI synthetic voice out what we already have,'" Friedlander said.
