Google Trains Its AI Robot Like ChatGPT
Google has developed a new AI learning model called Robotic Transformer (RT-2) to make its robots smarter. RT-2 is an improved version of the vision-language-action (VLA) model, which enables robots to better understand visual and language patterns to interpret instructions and make informed decisions.
Researchers tested RT-2 with a robotic arm in a kitchen office setting. The robot successfully identified a rock as an improvised hammer and chose a Red Bull as a drink for an exhausted person. It also showed its affinity for Taylor Swift by moving a Coke can to her picture.
The new model was trained on a combination of web and robotics data, incorporating the advancements made in large language models like Google's Bard. It can comprehend instructions in languages other than English, enhancing its versatility.
In the past, teaching robots was time-consuming and required individual programming of directions. With the introduction of VLA models like RT-2, robots can access a broader range of information to infer the best course of action.
Despite the advancements, the new robot isn't perfect and has some limitations. The New York Times reported instances where it misidentified soda flavors and mistook fruit for the color white.

By combining the power of large language models with robotics data, RT-2 equips robots with enhanced visual and language recognition, allowing them to interpret instructions more effectively and carry out tasks with increased efficiency.
