“Google won’t lose to open-source”
In a recent interview, Demis Hassabis, the CEO of DeepMind, Google's renowned AI subsidiary, discussed the role of open-source AI models and their potential impact on Google's dominance in the industry.
Hassabis addressed a leaked memo from a Google researcher that came out earlier this year, which questioned the company's future in AI. The memo suggested that open-source models posed a significant threat. While acknowledging the legitimacy of the memo, Hassabis expressed his disagreement with its conclusions.
According to Hassabis, leaked documents authored by Google engineers are not uncommon, occasionally making waves when they find their way into the public domain. He believes it's essential to pay attention to these perspectives but emphasized the need for individual charting of the course.
Although he hadn't examined the specific memo in depth, Hassabis expressed his differing viewpoint regarding its conclusions.
The leaked memo, originally shared on a public Discord server and later obtained by SemiAnalysis, asserted that neither Google nor OpenAI possessed the necessary tools for success in the AI industry.
The researcher claimed that a third faction, comprising open-source AI models, had been silently surpassing the competition. These models, according to the researcher, exhibited superior speed, customizability, privacy, and overall capability.
Despite the pessimistic tone of the memo, Hassabis remains confident about Google's prospects in the AI industry. He believes that the competitive spirit of the company's researchers will propel Google to the forefront of AI innovation.
Moreover, Hassabis mentioned the recent merger of Google Brain and Google DeepMind teams, which he was asked to lead, as a significant factor that will likely result in more groundbreaking discoveries.
Reflecting on the history of Google and DeepMind's achievements in terms of innovation and breakthroughs, Hassabis expressed his confidence in the company's ability to continue producing pivotal advancements. He sees Google as a frontrunner in AI and is particularly optimistic that the next decade will bring even more key breakthroughs, building on their past successes.
