🤖 Is Google's Gemma Truly Open? Unpacking the Open Model Controversy

NP#184

Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!

Today, we’re talking about the real story of Google Gemma’s “openness” 👀

Google Gemma Unwrapped: What 'Open Model' Really Means

The recent unveiling of Google Gemma has sparked discussions regarding its 'openness.' While Google has branded Gemma as an "open model," it's crucial to understand that this does not equate to being open-source. Gemma, derived from the same technology as the Gemini models, offers free access to model weights but comes with specific terms of use that differ from traditional open-source licenses.

Gemma, available in two sizes, 2B and 7B, has shown superior performance on benchmarks like MMLU, HellaSwag, and HumanEval compared to Meta’s fully open-source model, Llama 2. However, the distinction between being an open model versus open-source lies in the usage constraints imposed by Google, which could limit developers' freedom and innovation.

Vin Vashishta, an author and AI advisor, highlights the significant implications of the open model approach. While it allows public access to the weights, it places considerable restrictions on how the models can be utilized, potentially stifling creativity and innovation within the open-source LLM community. This approach allows Google to maintain a degree of control over Gemma, enabling potential monetization strategies that would not be possible with a purely open-source model.

Despite Gemma's open model structure, Google emphasizes its commitment to 'responsible AI,' aligning the release with its AI Principles to ensure the technology's benefits outweigh the risks of misuse. This approach mirrors Google's long-standing involvement in open-source projects like Android and Chromium, which have significantly impacted mobile and web technologies.

However, the release of Gemma in an open model format, rather than fully open-source, raises questions about the future of transparency and collaboration in AI development. While Google attempts to balance openness with control, the tech community continues to debate the true openness of such models and their implications for innovation and ethical AI development 👀
