🤖 The great AI bubble, ethical AI, and the future of work
5/5/23
Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 The $225 million dollar chatbot
🌊 Companies lagging in AI adoption
🌊 The White house begins work on “ethical AI”
Let’s get into it!
The $225mm Chatbot
Welcome to the great AI bubble, where a startup that had yet to release a product was able to raise $225 million dollars based on a chatbot concept, with plans to raise an additional $450 million more…
But that’s not to say that the company won’t be successful.
AI startup Inflection has two rockstar co-founders, including LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and the co-founder of Google’s DeepMind AI research team Mustafa Suleyman, so it’s safe to say the founders have a decent idea on how to turn a concept into a profitable business.
So what exactly are they building? Great question.
Rather than competing head on with tools like ChatGPT with another productivity-boosting chatbot, the company is developing an AI designed to be a supportive virtual friend.
“Many people feel like they just want to be heard, and they just want a tool that reflects back what they said to demonstrate they have actually been heard,” Suleyman told Bloomberg.
The Pi chatbot is meant “to help navigate your life and your relationship with others,” Hoffman said at a conference earlier this week.
So if you find yourself in a troubled relationship, for example, “you can use Pi to debug it.”
Personally I can’t wait to use the chatbot’s advice to “debug” my girlfriends anger the next time I forget our anniversary…
What a time to be alive.
The State of AI Adoption
Even though it’s only been 6 months since AI tools like ChatGPT have hit the scene, it’s hard to imagine going back to a world without them…
Which is why it’s shocking to find out that a majority companies are not using them.
A recent study conducted by Slack found that only 30% of the companies surveyed have adopted AI and automation tools to improve productivity, presenting early adopters with a massive opportunity to get a jump on the competition.
As for the companies that have adopted AI, this technological shift is forcing managers to rethink the traditional methods of measuring worker productivity, a shift that many companies are struggling with.
“There’s much more to productivity than inputs alone,” said Christina Janzer, SVP of research at Slack.
“It’s key to build a culture that measures performance based on results instead of solely tracking inputs like hours worked or emails sent.”
Companies like LG, for example, are using generative AI to automate time-consuming repetitive tasks, freeing up workers time so that they can focus on projects that require human intelligence and creativity.
What this all really breaks down to is that AI has pushed every person and company on the planet into an adopt-or-perish situation, with the general lack of AI adoption creating a massive opportunity for early adopters to advance in their career or build a new company faster than ever.

Ethical AI
Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI have teamed up with the White House to develop ethical guidelines for artificial intelligence, ensuring that our digital overlords will treat us with the utmost kindness and respect.
The initiative, dubbed "Project Conscience," aims to ensure that AI systems are developed responsibly and transparently, with plans to develop transparency standards and auditing mechanisms for AI systems.
Leading the charge on this initiative are Dr. Timnit Gebru, a renowned AI ethicist, and Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, who've joined forces to "define and deploy ethical AI practices that will guide the future of AI in a positive and responsible manner."
I would say that it’s strange that the person who has the most to gain from AI is the one crafting the regulations, but that’s par for the course in the United States.
