Hollywood is on strike, because they are scared of AI. Let’s dive in!

Hollywood Actors Scared of AI

Hollywood actors have united with screenwriters in a massive strike, resulting in the industry's largest shutdown in over six decades. At midnight in Los Angeles, around 160,000 performers halted their work, causing a standstill in most US film and TV productions.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) initiated the strike to demand fairer profit sharing and protection against the threat of AI replacing human actors.

The SAG aims to secure guarantees that AI and computer-generated faces and voices will not be utilized to supplant actors in the entertainment industry. Until the strike concludes, actors are refraining from appearing in films or even promoting the movies they have already completed.

This has already led stars like Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt to leave the premiere of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer in London when the strike was declared. Nolan, the film's director, expressed his support for the strike, acknowledging the actors' struggle and their decision to prioritize their cause.

To address concerns about the use of AI, the major studios presented what they considered a "ground-breaking proposal". This proposal aimed to protect the digital likeness of actors and necessitate their consent when digital replicas are employed or alterations are made.

However, the offer was rejected by the SAG, deeming it unacceptable. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the SAG's national executive director and chief negotiator, stated that the proposal allowed companies to own actors' scanned images indefinitely, which he found objectionable.

Not everyone in Hollywood is worried …

In a recent interview, the man behind the voice of Disney's Mickey Mouse, said he believes that AI could never truly capture the essence of the beloved character. He stated: "Gosh, there's no doubt that amazing AI technology is being developed, and it's incredibly impressive. But I don't think anything can replace the essence of a character, and more importantly, the magic of storytelling."

But the worries of the actors and screenwriters are certainly not ungrounded …

AI offers the possibility of manipulating an actor's performance, such as altering their facial movements and mouth to match different words or languages. And through deep fakes, actors could potentially even be fully replaced. This video shows a perfect example of how AI could be used in Hollywood.
