🤖 Human cyborgs and JP Morgan's AI ambitions
5/27/23
Good morning and welcome to the latest issue of neonpulse!
Here are the AI headlines making waves:
🌊 Neuralink gets FDA greenlight
🌊 JPMorgan’s AI ambitions
Let’s get into it!
Neuralink Gets The Greenlight
Elon Musk isn’t the only person that’s concerned about AI…
But he’s one of the few people on the planet actually doing something about it.
In response to the potential dangers of digital super-intelligence, Elon founded not one, but 2 companies…
OpenAI and Neuralink.
Musk’s goal for OpenAI was to ensure the responsible development of AI to prevent a terminator-like future, while the goal of Neuralink is to integrate this new level of super-intelligence directly into humans.
Neuralink Chip
At its core Neuralink is a brain-computer interface, and while Elon has stated that the long term goal of the technology is to help achieve “symbiosis with artificial intelligence,” the company plans to start off by helping people restore abilities lost due to brain and spinal injuries.
“We would initially enable someone who has almost no ability to operate their muscles … and enable them to operate their phone faster than someone who has working hands,” Musk said.
“As miraculous as it may sound, we are confident that it is possible to restore full body functionality to someone who has a severed spinal cord.”
And while the company has previously tested the technology on monkeys, demonstrating their ability to play basic video games using just their brain, the company has just received FDA approval to begin human clinical studies, representing a major milestone for the company.
And while the technology will still take years before it’s ready for mass adoption, it’s foreseeable that before the year 2030 you could be running the boards at Jeopardy thanks to your shiny new Neuralink chip.
You can check out a video of a monkey playing pong using only his brain on YouTube here.
JP Morgan’s AI Ambitions
In-between buying failing banks, apparently JPMorgan has been hard at work finding ways to integrate AI into its financial business.
One of their newest initiatives is an AI-powered chatbot called “IndexGPT,” which was discovered in a recent trademark application by the company.
According to the trademark application, IndexGPT is a “cloud computing software using artificial intelligence” that can carry out “selection of financial securities and financial assets” and make investment choices “tailored to customer needs.”
Beyond IndexGPT, the bank has a significant number of staff dedicated to various AI projects, with CEO Jamie Dimon stating that the bank has “300 AI use cases in production” in the areas of risk, prospecting, marketing, customer experience and fraud prevention.
Wondering what kind of impact AI could have on a bank this size?
Well according to a recent investor call, the bank’s global chief information officer Lori Beer stated that “We’re ahead of our plan to deliver on our commitment to deliver $1 billion in business value through AI.”
And while it would be great to think that JP Morgan would share this type of technology with the world, if they’re able to find a winning formula for AI to help produce exceptionally high returns, we have a feeling that they’re going to keep it to themselves.
