🤖 Is it too late to stop AI?

Good morning and welcome to the latest edition of neonpulse!

We ended yesterday’s issue on a very loaded question: Is it too late to stop AI? AI dangers are the talk of the town, followed by conversations about regulation. But aren’t we already too late?

Is It Too Late to Stop AI?

The potential dangers of AI are very real, but so is the conversation about regulation.

This recent article by iNews lines out the potential human extinction scenarios caused by AI. These include the use of AI for propaganda, the destruction of infrastructure through hacking, risks associated with autonomous weapons, triggering a nuclear war, the creation of deadly viruses or chemicals, self-replicating nanobots, and the gradual replacement of humans by AI. Wow.

While some of these scenarios are more likely than others and it is very much possible that none of them ever happen at all, we should take the risks very seriously. But let’s say we wanted to stop AI, can we? Or is it too late to stop AI?

To assess this, there is one crucial concept to keep in mind - singularity.

“Singularity refers to the idea that someday in the future, the technologies and artificially intelligent machines will surpass human intelligence.”

This would be a point in time where AI is smarter than humans. Where it will be able to evolve itself, without any help. A point in time where we can’t control it anymore.

Now, has this point already occurred? Well the problem is: it’s impossible to tell. When can we truly say - yes, AI is smarter than us?

As AI development continues at a rapid pace, it becomes increasingly challenging to determine if it is too late to halt its progress, even if we desired to do so. However, what we can strive for is steering AI in the right direction, realizing its potential beauties while minimizing the potential risks.

Ultimately, only time will be able to tell what AI will bring us - the good, the bad and the ugly.
