The MASSIVE Potential for AI in Manufacturing
The integration of AI in manufacturing is not just a technological leap, but a necessity. Ritu Jyoti, the global AI research lead at market-intelligence firm IDC, gives a compelling example of how AI is changing the windmill industry.
Before AI, improving windmills involved a time-consuming process of analyzing data from a functioning prototype, taking weeks to complete. Now, with the advent of AI and machine learning, manufacturers use digital twins — a digital model of an operational windmill.
By employing drones and AI technologies to gather measurements, this process has been drastically shortened. According to Jyoti, this AI/ML technology is now considered essential for manufacturers, as it has become synonymous with staying relevant in the industry.
Manufacturers are increasingly turning to digital transformation to stay competitive in the face of disruptions. By using AI, companies can streamline operations, combat downtime, deploy robotics for enhanced safety and speed, employ computer vision to swiftly detect anomalies, and develop AI systems to analyze vast amounts of data, identifying patterns and predicting customer needs.
Pierre Goutorbe, AI solutions director for energy and manufacturing at Dataiku, emphasizes the collaborative potential of AI in manufacturing. He highlights the importance of bridging the gap between business experts and data professionals, working together to gain insights and improve processes.
Goutorbe emphasizes that the more workers become familiar with AI and integrate it into their daily routines, the greater the benefits they will reap from this transformative technology.
Despite the clear advantages AI brings to the manufacturing sector, a study conducted in June 2023 by Dataiku and Databricks reveals that the industry is still in the early stages of AI adoption. Approximately 24% of manufacturing companies are in the exploration or experimentation phase, while only 19% of companies in other industries are at this initial stage.
However, the challenges posed by supply-chain disruptions and worker shortages have accelerated the innovation and integration of AI in manufacturing, pointing toward a future where AI becomes an integral part of the industry's success.
