Meta is putting AI chatbots everywhere
Meta is launching its AI assistant across popular social media platforms including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, accompanied by 28 AI characters, some of which are modeled after celebrities like MrBeast and Charli D’Amelio. This new assistant is designed to be a general-purpose tool, capable of assisting users in planning, answering queries, and more, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft’s Bing that enables real-time web results.
One of the standout features of Meta's AI is its image generation capability, akin to OpenAI’s DALL-E, allowing users to create high-resolution images for free to all users, underscoring Meta’s commitment to enhancing user engagement and creativity.
Ahmad Al-Dahle, the VP of generative AI at Meta, reveals that the assistant is a product of a “custom-made” large language model. It draws inspiration from the core principles of Llama 2, Meta’s quasi-open source model, rapidly gaining traction across various sectors. The assistant’s development has been significantly influenced by the insights and innovations stemming from the widespread adoption of Llama 2.
Meta AI is characterized by its conversational and friendly tone, a deliberate enhancement to counter the robotic and bland nature of existing AI models. The expansion of the model’s context window ensures a deeper and more meaningful interaction with users, characterized by concise and insightful responses.
The assistant is part of a broader ecosystem that includes 28 AI characters, each offering a unique interaction experience. The “embodiments” feature ensures that as users engage with these characters, their profile images animate in real-time, adding a layer of immersion and dynamism to the interaction.
Safety and ethical use are at the core of Meta AI’s design. Rigorous testing and red-teaming have been employed to identify and mitigate potential misuse, ensuring that the assistant aligns with ethical standards and safety protocols.
While currently not trained on public user data from Instagram and Facebook, future integrations are anticipated to enhance personalized user experiences. Al-Dahle envisions a scenario where users could request tailored content, such as “show me reels from the south of Italy,” showcasing the assistant’s potential to offer unique services that other chatbots can’t replicate.
Meta’s extensive reach, characterized by billions of daily users across its messaging apps, is seen as a significant competitive advantage. The integration of the AI assistant within these platforms ensures seamless access and interaction, eliminating the need for users to transition between apps.
This development positions Meta as a significant player in the AI chatbot space, potentially introducing a large segment of the population to AI assistants for the first time.
