Meta partners with Microsoft to beat ChatGPT
Meta, in partnership with Microsoft, has made its large language model LLaMA 2 open source and available for commercial and research use. This move puts Meta in direct competition with OpenAI's GPT-4, which powers tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing. Meta announced this decision during Microsoft's Inspire event, highlighting the growing partnership between the two companies and their support for Azure and Windows. Additionally, Qualcomm revealed its collaboration with Meta to bring LLaMa to various devices, such as laptops, phones, and headsets, starting in 2024.
Meta's aim in open-sourcing LLaMA 2 is to provide businesses, startups, and researchers with access to more AI tools, enabling experimentation within the community. LLaMA 2 was trained on 40 percent more data than its predecessor, incorporating information from publicly available online sources. Meta claims that LLaMA 2 outperforms other large language models like Falcon and MPT in reasoning, coding, proficiency, and knowledge tests.
Safety and transparency are important considerations for Meta, and they have subjected the LLaMA 2 model to rigorous testing, internally and externally, to ensure its safety. The model has been red-teamed, involving generating adversarial prompts for fine-tuning. Meta plans to make LLaMA 2 available through Microsoft's Azure platform, as well as other providers like AWS and Hugging Face.
Meta believes that an open approach is crucial for the development of AI models, especially in the generative space where technology is advancing rapidly. By opening access to AI models like LLaMA 2, developers and researchers can collectively stress test them, identify issues, and find solutions more efficiently.
While Meta initially announced the LLaMA model in February but it was leaked on 4chan shortly thereafter. With the open-source LLaMA 2 now available, we can expect the development of new AI-powered tools based on this model. Meta received over 100,000 requests from researchers to use the first model, and the open-source LLaMA 2 is expected to have an even greater impact and reach.
