First AI-Developed Medication Enters Clinical Trials

A groundbreaking milestone has been reached as the first-ever AI-powered drug, named INS018_055, enters clinical trials involving human patients. This revolutionary medication, developed entirely using artificial intelligence (AI), aims to combat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a debilitating lung disease characterized by scarring. Current treatments for IPF have limited efficacy and often come with uncomfortable side effects, highlighting the urgent need for an innovative solution.

What sets INS018_055 apart is its unique combination of an AI-discovered target and an AI-generated design. This makes it the first generative AI drug to progress to human clinical trials, specifically Phase II trials. Alex Zhavoronkov, the CEO of Insilico Medicine, a well-funded biotech startup based in Hong Kong, expressed great excitement about the drug's potential. While other AI-designed drugs are also in development, INS018_055 stands out due to its comprehensive AI-driven approach.

The journey toward this breakthrough began in 2020, driven by a mission to develop a groundbreaking medicine that addresses the challenges associated with IPF treatment. Insilico Medicine chose to focus on this particular condition because of its implications in aging. The company has two other drugs, partially generated using AI, in clinical stages: a phase one Covid-19 drug and a cancer drug targeting solid tumors. The cancer drug has recently gained FDA approval for clinical trials.

The current study for the IPF drug is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted over a period of 12 weeks in China. Insilico has plans to expand the trial's scope, aiming to include 60 subjects across 40 sites in the United States and China. Positive results from Phase II would pave the way for subsequent studies with larger participant cohorts, potentially leading to Phase III trials involving hundreds of patients.

While predicting the exact timeline is challenging due to the rarity of the disease and strict criteria for patient selection, Zhavoronkov remains optimistic about the drug's future availability. He expects to obtain results from the ongoing Phase II trial next year and envisions INS018_055 reaching the market within the next few years to benefit those suffering from IPF.

Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Shopping Tools

Microsoft is revolutionizing online shopping with the introduction of AI-powered tools integrated into the Bing search engine and Bing AI chatbot. This exciting announcement brings a range of refreshing and practical features that surpass the previous shopping functionalities in Microsoft Edge.

One standout tool is Bing's use of AI capabilities powered by GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) to automatically generate comprehensive buying guides. No longer will users need to scour the internet for product information and recommendations. Now, when searching for items like "college supplies," Bing will gather products in each category and provide a list of specifications for easy comparison.

This new offering has the potential to disrupt existing sites specializing in buying guides, but it undeniably transforms the user experience. Say goodbye to low-quality, SEO-optimized shopping content that often complicates the comparison process. With Bing's AI-generated buying guides, online shopping becomes streamlined, efficient, and enjoyable. It will be interesting to observe the impact on legitimate editorial operations as this trend gains traction, particularly considering the potential response from other search engine giants like Google.

The buying guides feature is already available in the United States, and the global rollout is underway, promising enhanced shopping experiences for users worldwide. Microsoft's commitment to empowering users in their purchasing decisions is evident as they continue to innovate and improve the digital shopping landscape.

In addition to buying guides, Microsoft introduces another remarkable feature: AI-generated review summaries. Users can simply ask Bing Chat in Edge to summarize the sentiments expressed in online product reviews, and it will swiftly generate a concise overview. This saves users time and effort in analyzing numerous reviews, enabling them to make informed decisions more quickly and easily.
