The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI is a complex interplay of mutual benefit and strategic dominance.
Integration of ChatGPT into Microsoft
Microsoft has significantly benefited from the partnership, especially with the integration of OpenAI's technologies into its Copilot product and the Microsoft 365 suite. The recent announcement of further enhancements to Copilot, including the integration of GPT-4 Turbo and other OpenAI applications, underscores Microsoft's commitment to embedding AI into its product ecosystem. This move has not only enhanced Microsoft's offerings but also expanded the reach of OpenAI's technologies.
Microsoft Brings Business (But Keeps It Too)
A significant portion of ChatGPT Enterprise customers, nearly 79%, have been attributed to the Microsoft Azure-OpenAI partnership. This figure indicates that ChatGPT Enterprise is heavily reliant on Microsoft's user base, with only a small percentage of users coming directly from ChatGPT Enterprise. The vast user base of Microsoft Azure, which includes over 722 million users and 85% of Fortune 500 companies, presents a massive potential market for ChatGPT Enterprise. However, the ecosystem created by Microsoft Azure, effectively retains users within its platform, making it challenging for them to transition to other platforms like ChatGPT Enterprise.
A Seat on the Board
With Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella holding a non-voting observer seat on the OpenAI board, Microsoft exerts significant influence over OpenAI's business decisions. Despite this, Microsoft is cautious about being too closely tied with OpenAI, as evidenced by Nadella's emphasis on a 'broad tent approach' and the development of their language model Phi and open-source models on Azure.
