Would Audiences Pay for Deep Fake Tom Cruise?

Hollywood is facing a dilemma that could have far-reaching consequences. AI has the potential to create digital versions of actors like Tom Cruise, which raises the question: would audiences pay to see a fake Tom Cruise on the big screen?

The film industry is grappling with this issue, as striking writers and concerned actors fear the possibility of being rendered irrelevant in the age of AI.

Hollywood is currently going through a dark period as actors join the writers on the picket line. The traditional business model of the industry has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of streaming services. Now, with AI technology shaping a new economic model, writers and actors are demanding a fair deal that acknowledges their value in this changing landscape.

Writers are concerned about being replaced by algorithms, while actors want to protect their digital likenesses from being owned by others. It's a complex issue with no easy answers.

On one hand, writers are advocating against the use of AI, but some studio executives may see AI as a potential tool to meet tight deadlines and finish scripts more efficiently.

The advancement of AI capabilities has made them increasingly proficient, to the point where some studio executives may be tempted to bypass human screenwriters altogether.

As Matthew Belloni from Puck's magazine suggested, it's not far-fetched to imagine a scenario where AI is used to create scripts with specific parameters, such as turning "The Social Network" into a movie about Elon Musk instead of Mark Zuckerberg.

Jaron Lanier, a pioneer in VR, has long warned about the potential pitfalls of AI. He has argued that when machines translate languages or generate content, they are essentially leeching from human creators. Lanier believes that translators and creators should have the right to negotiate compensation for their contributions to AI development.

Now, the issue of compensation has taken center stage. Comedian Sarah Silverman has joined class-action lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, alleging copyright infringement. She claims that these companies used her work to train their AIs without her consent or compensation.

AI presents both opportunities and risks. It's up to us to strike a balance that ensures the fair treatment of creators and safeguards the well-being of society as a whole. The struggle in Hollywood is just the beginning of a much larger conversation.
